How to Prepare for Your AC Tune-Up Appointment
Scheduling your annual AC tune-up is the hard part. Preparing for it takes about 15 minutes. A little prep before the technician arrives helps the visit go faster, ensures nothing gets skipped, and in some cases can actually affect whether the job gets done in one trip.
Here's exactly what to do before your appointment.
Before the Technician Arrives
1. Turn on your outdoor hose bib
This one surprises a lot of homeowners. Your technician will need access to a working garden hose to rinse the condenser coils on your outdoor unit. Cleaning the coils is a standard part of every tune-up, and a hose is the tool for the job.
If your outdoor hose bib is still shut off from winter, turn it back on before your appointment. Make sure a hose is connected and within reach of the outdoor unit. If the water isn't available, the technician may not be able to complete the full cleaning on that visit.
2. Replace your air filter beforehand if it's overdue
If you know your filter hasn't been changed in several months, swap it out before the appointment. A tech arriving to a badly clogged filter spends time on something you could have handled yourself, and it can affect the accuracy of airflow readings taken during the tune-up.

3. Clear the area around your outdoor unit
Give the technician room to work. Remove anything within two feet of the condenser: patio furniture, potted plants, garden tools, bikes, or anything else that's migrated into that space over spring. Trim back any overgrown shrubs or grass that's crept up around the unit.
This takes five minutes and means your tech can get straight to work rather than clearing the area themselves.
4. Make sure your indoor unit is accessible
Your technician needs to access the air handler or furnace inside your home to inspect the evaporator coil, blower, and drain line. Before the appointment, clear any storage, boxes, or clutter that may have built up around the unit in your basement, utility room, or closet.
5. Know where your thermostat and electrical panel are
The technician will need to access both at some point during the visit. If your panel is in an awkward or hard-to-reach spot, knowing where it is ahead of time saves everyone a few minutes of searching.
6. Make a note of anything unusual
If your system has been doing anything out of the ordinary lately, write it down before the appointment. Unusual sounds, rooms that aren't cooling evenly, higher-than-normal energy bills, or anything else that felt off. A quick rundown when the technician arrives helps them know where to pay extra attention.
What Happens During the Visit
Once the tech is on site, a standard tune-up typically takes one to two hours. They'll inspect and clean the condenser and evaporator coils, check refrigerant levels, test electrical components including the capacitor and contactor, inspect the blower motor, verify the drain line is clear, and run the system to check overall performance.
You don't need to hover, but staying available to answer questions or point out anything you've noticed keeps things moving.
